AFC (Automatic Frequency Control)

In FM mode, a shift in the operation frequency results in a signal no longer being fed to the centre of the IF filter and to the demodulator stage. Many superior receivers, are equipped with a control circuit (AFC) which, in the event of receiver drift or inaccurate tuning, corrects the operation frequency by applying a control voltage and brings the signal to the centre of the IF filter and thus optimises the demodulation.

In most cases, the AFC can be switched off; otherwise, in the vicinity of a strong FM transmitter, the automatic system may detune the receiver to a strong adjacent channel station and the desired weak signal cannot be heard.
