The Inoue Electric Factory Company Ltd. was founded in 1964 and soon got a good reputation for their solid state amateur radio equipment, initially covering the VHF range. After several portable transceivers, Icom brought out the IC-R70 in 1982, it was the first in a series of successful receivers.

Icom initially produced VHF transceivers, but after several successful shortwave transceivers, Icom launched its first shortwave communications receiver, the IC-R70, in 1982, which was followed by a series of successful tabletop receivers and later wide band and even fully computer controlled black box receivers.
