Travel portables from Sangean
Manufactured by Sangean, Chung Ho City, Taipei Hsien 235, Taiwan.
The Taiwanese manufacturer Sangean first attracted attention with small travel radios in analogue technology, which were sold worldwideby large electronics discounters under various brand names.
In Europe, many shortwave listeners first became aware of Sangean through the receivers offered under the Siemens label. After Siemens had withdrawn from the home electronics sector a few years later, the receivers were offered under Sangean's own brand name.
As one of the most popular successors of the Sony ICF-2001, Sangean launched the ATS-803 in a similar format, which outpaced it's ancestor with an LED chain acting as field strength meter, clock functions and especially in the improved version with two switchable IF filters.
Among the travel receivers with double conversion technology which followed, the ATS-818CS with its integrated cassette recorder stood out, a really excellent set was the ATS-909 which was equally sensitive and selective. It featured not only had a big number of memories with the possibility of alphanumeric labewlling, but could also display the RDS station information on VHF. In an improved version, it's still sold in 2021 and one of the very few shortwave portables not coming from PR China.
