The Taiwanese company Sangean was not very well known in the shortwave listeners market, before they started prodicing several cheap analog multiband shortwave travel sets.
In Europe, many listeners heard from Sangean the first time, after Siemens had made the decision to leave the consumer electronics / shortwave travel radio market - the same well known receivers suddenly re-appeared under the name of Sangean. And quite often, they did reappear with a much better price...
The Sangean ATS-803 was one of the very popular successors of Sony's first microprocessor controlled shortwave portable, the ICF-2001. The Sangean set featured quite similar dimensions, the same chain of LEDs as signal strength meter, the clock and timer functions, but the improved A-version did even beat the Sony as far as selectivity and battery consumption are concerned.
Amongst several double conversion sets, the Sangean ATS-818CS with it's integrated cassette recorder and finally the ATS-909 with it's superior sensitivity and selectivity, many alphanumeric memories and RDS (Radio Data System) decoding capabilities in the FM band were very successful.
